You Can't Handle THE 'Nath- Updated Deck List.

Hey all,

I am writing up an updated Omnath deck list so Andy can post a link to it in the Commandercast notes, so here goes.  Note that I am saving a fullblown deck breakdown for an article so i will just go over it briefly.

Boseiju, Who Shelters All
Forest x 20
Ghost Quarter
Misty Rainforest
Mosswort Bridge
Mystifyin Maze
Reliquary Tower
Strip Mine
Thawing Glaciers
Verdant Catacombs
Wasteland
Winding Canyon
Yavimaya hollow

Land is pretty straightforward- the LD lands are to take care of the Coffers/Urborg combo type decks in my metas; Crucible of Worlds will back up this srategy.  Boseiju is wonderful for hitting the Praetor's Counsel or a massive Genesis Wave without worrying about a counterspell.

Garruk Wildspeaker

Garruk is pretty much all there is for a non-elfy Green planeswalker.  The double untap ability works particularly well with the mana doublers.  Primal Hunter will go straight in here as soon as I procureth him.

Acidic Slime
Avenger of Zendikar
Brutalizer Exarch
Dawnstrider
Duplicant
Eternal Witness
Fauna Shaman
Genesis
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
Master of the Wild Hunt
Melira, Sylvok Replica
Nullmage Shepherd
Oracle of Mul Daya
Primeval Titan
Regal Force
Riftsweeper
Sakura-Tribe Elder
Scavenging Ooze
Seedborn Muse
Silklash Spider
Solemn Simulacrum
Steel Hellkite
Sylvan Safekeeper
Terastodon
Woodfall Primus
Yavimaya Elder

Mostly green good stuff creatures here.  I love utility creatures and green has those in force, and I want to make sure any mechanic or ability is on a creature if possible (Acidic Slime over Creeping Mold) for three reasons- creature tutors like Green Sun's Zenith, recursion like Genesis or Mimic Vat, and blink effects like Tawnos's Coffin.

Basalt Monolith
Birthing Pod
Caged Sun
Crucible of Worlds
Gauntlet of Power
Grim Monolith
Lightning Greaves
Mana Vault
Mimic Vat
Oblivion Stone
Predator, Flagship
Sensei's Divining Top
Sol Ring
Tawnos's Coffin
Vedalken Orrery

The untappable mana rocks combine with Mana Reflection to make an infinite source of colorless mana which will help us end a stagnant game with a giant Genesis Wave or hitting Kamahl's overrun ability on GG for a GG.  The artifact slots will mostly deal with creatures, which Green is notoriously weak against- Predator, Flagship is an awesome repetitive mana sink and Oblivion Stone will clean a board that gets out of hand.

Abundance
Asceticism
Awakening Zone
Gaea's Touch
Greater Good
Holistic Wisdom
Mana Reflection
Mirri's Guile
Survival of the Fittest
Sylvan Library

Pretty straight forward enchantment list- I will note that it is important to double up (or triple up in this case) any mechanic that we will deifnitely want- dig and draw like Sylvan Library, Mirri' Guile, and the Top are all integral to the green strategy and helps make sure we won't run out of gas or be stuck without an answer to a game winning query.  The image of Omnath hunched over a lil japanese top is hilarious to me.

Collective Voyage
Genesis Wave
Green Sun's Zenith
Harmonize
Nostalgic Dreams
Praetor's Counsel
Primal Command
Regrowth
Tooth and Nail

Not to much to explain here.  Since I can feasibly survive off of just a few green lands, Collective Voyage has really helped me ramp up without sending purely aggressive signals.

Beast Within
Evolution Charm
Krosan Grip
Momentous Fall
Summoner's Pact
Worldly Tutor

If you notice, I have cut down on the non-essential non-permanents.  Most of the important mechanics Green needs are available on a permanent body and are usually reusable.  Since I love casting Genesis Wave, I try to maximize its potential.

Overall you play this deck like a control deck, which throws people off.  You won't want to send many aggressive signals if you can avoid it because we do have a few vulnerabilities, especially to LD and sweepers.  Missing land drops usually placates opponents who will often be more concerned with the early drop creatures and their Swords.  Even when others know your strategy, common magic sense that a player stuck on three lands is a non-threat kicks in and will reduce the chance that you will get hosed by Identity Crisis or stuff like that.

On the otherhand, sometimes you will draw everything you need to destroy the board by turn 4

turn 1- forest
turn 2- forest and Grim Monolith
turn 3- forest and Mana Reflection
turn 4- Genesis Wave for all but 10-15 cards of library.  Unless you fuck it up bad, you just won, and with Style.

Playing Omnath early is usually a bad idea, as he is a scary brute that gains WAY more momentum than most creatures do as he sits in play.  Wait til the coast is clear or you have an asceticism/shroud effect that will keep him alive.  The fact that he can easily hit players for lethal in one go makes him public enemy number one, and if an opponent has no way to black a massive 'Nath then feel free to knock that player out.  Omnath just walks up to the opponent and flicks them once for a deathblow.
