This is a current pet project of mine that is a WiP – a Commander League that starts off with Pauper-style decks that get better as the games go by.
After careful consideration, I have had the following ideas: At the beginning of the league, each player will choose a commander and make a deck, though will only be able to choose cards printed in the commander’s ‘block identity’ (i.e. Kiki-Jiki’s block identity is Kamigawa- this includes any reprints.) What’s more, each player may only choose up to two Mythic or Rare cards (excluding Planeswalkers) and cannot have more uncommon cards than common cards (excluding basic lands,) though an equal ratio is fine. Additionally, a player may choose a single Legendary Creature from outside the block identity to act as the commander’s lieutenant.
With each game in the league, players will get new card choices based on how well they did – the winner of the pod will be awarded a Mythic Rare slot that may come from any of the opposing commander’s block identity, second place a Rare, third an Uncommon, and last place a Common. Once a player has taken first place in four or more games, they may recruit one (1) Planeswalker. This will take up the awarded Mythic slot.
I think the random way players acquire new card slots is going to help stem a strong deck from running away with the entire league. I would like to work in Planechase once I am more familiar with it. What do you guys think?
